Peony Society Info & Awards

In 1996, the Pacific Northwest Peony Society was founded by Peony lover Allan ‘Al’ Rogers. He wanted to form a group that got together to discuss peonies and one another’s’ love for the beautiful flower. The Pacific Northwest Peony Society started connecting local peony growers from around Oregon and Washington, and it has grown from there to now include home gardeners and peony lovers.

FOR THE ENJOYMENT, EDUCATION AND HISTORY OF PEONIES

The American Peony Society was established in 1903 to promote cultivated peonies and foster studies to improve its worth as a garden plant. Early on, founders recognized the need for standardization of peony names and this initiative continues to be a major component of the APS. Numerous member-focused activities are gaining popularity in a time of a peony renaissance.  Among the most popular events is the APS Convention, the largest Peony event in North America, which draws international peony enthusiasts. The APS Annual Flower Show, the “crown jewel” of the convention, is also open to the public. This free show offers a rare opportunity to see a dazzling array of peonies, including cut flowers, artistic floral designs and educational exhibits.  Garden tours during the event give members a rare opportunity to enjoy and learn about peonies and their growers. The annual convention also features entertaining and informational seminars that serve beginners through experts.

American Peony Society Award of Landscape Merit (ALM)

This award is granted to peonies that have outstanding landscape and growth characteristics. It was designed to provide information on particular peony varieties that would be desirable for landscapers to use in their garden designs. Included in characteristics are the ability to stand up in inclement weather and to be disease resistant. The first round of nominations were made by APS members in 2008 and the awards presented by the respected and knowledgeable committee members. Additional varieties were deferred for future consideration. See the March 2008 American Peony Society Bulletin for specific characteristics desired for nomination.
